And it is understood the Gers boss is interested in taking charge, following the sacking of Dean Smith.

Villa legend Agbonlahor, who remains close to the club, fully expects Gerrard to be appointed as the new manager.

“I’m hearing reports that it’s close to being done. I think, for Gerrard, it’s the perfect club,” Agbonlahor told talkSPORT.

“It gets him to the Premier League. Top club, fifth richest owners in the Premier League, they’ll give him money in January if needed.

“And look at the squad! That’s a squad of players that should be fighting to get into the top six.

“It’ll be a shame for Rangers, because he did an outstanding job there.”

And Agbonlahor is delighted by the potential news, tipping Gerrard to inspire a turnaround in form at Villa Park, after five straight defeats.

The Liverpool legend has emerged as one of the brightest managers around, inspiring domestic and European success at Ibrox after years of obscurity.

Agbonlahor added: “When I watch Rangers, they look organised. You see Gerrard’s passion on the side.

“I’m excited for these Villa players if he comes. When he steps in the building, he’s got their respect already.

“The players will be starstruck. They’ll say, ‘You know what? I have to work for this manager’.

“You look at Leon Bailey not tracking back against Southampton, he’ll be doing that straight away.

“Gerrard is no-nonsense, as a player and a manager.”
