Australia vs England series, highlights, results

England will once again turn to all-rounder Ben Stokes to drag them out of a horrible Ashes mess.

It was in the third Test of the 2019 series at Headingly when Stokes pulled off a sporting miracle, blasting 135 to clinch a stunning win for England and break Australian hearts.

All hope seemed lost when the then-hosts went to stumps on Day 4 on 3-156, needing a further 203 runs to win. They then fell to 9-286 before Stokes and last-man-in Jack Leach built a remarkable and unlikely partnership, Stokes hitting a boundary off Pat Cummins to lift England to 9-362 and surpass the Aussies.

In 2019, Stokes went to stumps on Day 4 on two runs off 50 deliveries. He resumes batting today at Adelaide Oval on 3 off 40. England are 4-82 and need 386 to win.

A win is almost unimaginable. A draw in Adelaide would be just as impressive, but to achieve that Stokes – and his remaining teammates – will need to last three full sessions against a fired-up Aussie attack with a pink ball – of which they can get a new one in 36 overs’ time.

It will be interesting now to see whether Stokes comes out all guns blazing and does try to pull off another miracle win, or whether he’s happy to park the bus and continue the stone-wall approach in an attempt to salvage a draw.

Of the 152 five-Test series that have been played in cricket, only once has a team recovered from being 2-0 down to win the remaining three matches, and take the series.

If the visitors lose in Adelaide, they will need to become the first since Don Bradman saved Australia in the 1936-37 Ashes series to win from 2-0 down.
