Champions League winner Ze Roberto is 47 years of age but reckons ripped physique is ‘better’ than Cristiano Ronaldo, he played with Ronaldinho and Kaka for Brazil in World Cup

Having won multiple league titles, as well as two Copa Americas and the Champions League, Ze Roberto could’ve been forgiven for thinking his football career would be the best days of his life.

But at nearly 48 years old, the former Real Madrid and Bayern Munich midfielder – who also played with Ronaldo and Ronaldinho for Brazil at the World Cup – is showing age is no barrier towards achieving your goals.

Since giving up playing, he became a personal trainer and defies logic with his ripped physique, although he was clearly keen on his fitness having only retired from playing football in 2017.

But what are the secrets to his success these days?

Speaking in March, he told Sky Sports: “I have never stopped training,” insisting that he could still play at the highest level if he fancied it.

“If I was to wear the [Manchester] City shirt today, in the physical condition I’m in, and with the way they play, I believe I could play in central midfield for them easily because it’s a team which never loses the ball.”

Speaking in his homeland, he said of his lifestyle: “I have no vices. I don’t drink alcoholic beverages, I don’t smoke, I eat very well, I sleep well.

“I have my family, which is my greatest security. I think those are important factors to reach the age I reached and still continue playing at a high level.”

And Ze Roberto believes he boasts a better physique than Manchester United star Cristiano Ronaldo, who has set the benchmark for footballers fitness levels during his glittering career.

However, he wouldn’t put it past the Portugal captain and top scoring international footballer of all time to overtake him.

He told TyC Sports: “Today I would say that I have a better physique, because I played until I was 43 years old.

“If he does [play until then], I will say it is him.”

However, he doesn’t see it happening owing to the Man United star’s desire to remain at the top level.

“Cristiano is, for me, a machine,” he added in his interview with Sky Sports. “But I don’t think he will still be going at 40 because he is a player who has always played at the highest level, always winning trophies and always trying to be the best player in the world.

“But in the last two years, we have seen he has not been able to do that with Juventus and now with Manchester United. The best proof of that is that he hasn’t been among the top two or three players for the big individual prizes.

“He is still a player who costs a lot, but as someone who is used to competing at such a high level, there will come a time when he decides it is better to stop rather than look for something that won’t be the same.”

Ze Roberto began his career as an attacking left-back and then attacking midfielder, but enjoyed a run in Brazil’s national side as a holding midfielder.

He ended up playing 84 times for his country and was part of the 1998 and 2006 World Cup squads.

“One of the objectives I had when I started playing in Brazil was to one day play for a big club in Europe, because that would enable me to wear the Brazil shirt and have a chance of representing my country at a World Cup. When you have clarity about your objectives, you automatically begin to work towards them.”

Having spent his career in Europe at Real Madrid in 1997 under Fabio Capello, Bayer Leverkusen, Bayern Munich and Hamburg, his last club was Palmeiras in his homeland in 2017.

However, talkSPORT sees your 48 years, Mr Roberto, and raises you a Ray Parlour at 49.

The Arsenal legend – nicknamed the ‘Romford Pele’ – showed he is still in great nick and he has been known to enjoy a ‘Cobra Bomb’ or two.
