Chelsea have reportedly reached an agreement in principle with Inter Milan for striker Romelu Lukaku to re-join the Serie A club on a season-long loan.
Lukaku’s second spell at Stamford Bridge has been a disaster, the Belgian scoring just eight Premier League goals and making just 16 league starts in the league.
He made a satisfactory start, however, his Blues career took a sudden downward turn following an explosive interview in December 2021 where he explained he wasn’t happy at Chelsea and revealed his hopes to return to the San Siro.
It appears he’s got his wish with The Athletic reporting Inter will pay a fee of €8 million (around £6.8m) plus add-ons, while terms over the 29-year-old’s salary and performance bonuses have also been accepted.
The report adds Lukaku’s expected to have a medical next week before completing his move back to the side he helped win the Serie A title in the 2020/21 season.
It’s understood paperwork for the transfer is in the process of being finalised, with the relationship between Chelsea’s new co-owner Todd Boehly and Michael Yormark – president of Roc Nation, who represent Lukaku – proving key to the deal getting done.
Inter will not have the option or obligation to buy Lukaku after his loan spell. The player is contracted with Chelsea until June 2026.
However, talkSPORT’s Danny Mills believes a separate permanent deal could be done between the two clubs in a year’s time anyway.
“I think it was needed for all clubs and clearly it hasn’t worked out,” Mills said on Kick Off.
“It happens from time to time. Players move for big money and it doesn’t work out for whatever reason.
“The money’s consequential to Chelsea owners, they can write that off, that’s not a huge problem. They’re probably going to get £10million in terms of his loan, Inter Milan are probably going to play the majority of his wages so he’s off the wage bill.
“What’s the option? Keep him there, keep him on the bench where he’s disruptive and unhappy or they use that money that’s going to work and be part of Thomas Tuchel’s plans.
“We all thought Romelu Lukaku was going to be a success but for whatever reason it hasn’t worked. Maybe the Premier League’s too much for him. It didn’t work for him at Manchester United, he didn’t look sharp, changed that when he went to Inter Milan and then he came back to Chelsea and didn’t look sharp yet again.
“Sometimes as a business you just have to cut your losses. If he plays really well and does fantastically for Inter Milan and they win the league and get in the Champions League and are challenging then they’re no doubt going to come in for him.
“If Chelsea turn round and say ‘give us £60m for him’, plus getting £10m this season, for one season they’ve maybe lost just under £20m. It’s not a huge dent.
“That’s how the Chelsea owners will be looking at it.”
