ELKINS — Fourth-seed Citizens Bank of West Virginia plated six runs in the bottom of the fifth inning in pulling away for an 8-1 win over fifth-seed Elkins Fordland Wednesday night at Robin Harvey Memorial Field in the opening game of the City Tournament.

Citizens’ Gage Huffman and Fordland’s Ethan Rosenau were locked into a pitchers’ duel through the first three innings.

Citizens (9-12) broke the scoreless deadlock in the bottom of the fourth when Huffman drew a walk and moved up to second on Elliott Smith’s sacrifice bunt.

Zack Bennett then singled in Huffman for the game’s first run and Kenton Haddix later added another run-producing single to center.

Fordland (7-14) answered in the fifth on an RBI single by Cole Shreve to make it 2-1.

But in the home-half of the frame, Citizens broke the game open, taking advantage of three errors and getting a two-run single by Jacob Wamsley and an RBI single from Haddix.

Huffman went all seven innings to earn the win, allowing eight hits.

Rosenau was tagged with the loss, going the first 4 1/3 innings and surrendering five runs on six hits.

Emory Jack and Preston Eversole also saw time on the hill. Eversole fanned the side in the bottom of the sixth inning.

Michael Love had a triple in the sixth for Fordland.

No. 3 Davis Trust Company and No. 6 Broughton’s Sports were scheduled to play Wednesday’s late game, weather permitting.

Citizens will now face top-seed McDonald’s, while the winner between DTC and Broughton’s battles second-seed Allegheny Insurance.
