US Open champion Emma Raducanu has won the British Sports Personality of the Year award.
The 19-year-old scooped up the prize thanks to her stunning year, which included a run to the fourth round of Wimbledon and of course winning the women’s singles title at the US Open.
Raducanu, who becomes the first woman to win the award since 2006, told the BBC: “It’s such an honour just to be among these nominees – to win it is pretty amazing.
“I watched Sports Personality of the Year growing up, so I’m really humbled to join the amazing past winners – I’m also really happy for British tennis that we managed to get this award again.
“All the support I’ve received this past year has been absolutely insane, and the energy I felt at Wimbledon this year playing in front of my home crowd is something I’ve never felt before.”
She beat the likes of Tyson Fury, who retained his WBC world heavyweight belt with an enthralling victory over Deontay Wilder. The Gypsy King had threatened to sue the BBC having previously demanded not to be nominated.
Raheem Sterling, who played a big role in helping England to the final of Euro 2020, was also a contender for the award.
Raducanu beat Tokyo Olympics gold medallist Tom Daley, who came second and three-time Olympic gold medallist Adam Peaty, who came third. Paralympics star Dame Sarah Storey was also nominated for the prize.
Elsewhere, the England men’s football team won the Team of the Year prize, while manager Gareth Southgate was named Coach of the Year.
Irish jocked Rachael Blackmore was named World Sports Star of the Year but there was no award for seven-time F1 champion Sir Lewis Hamilton, who narrowly missed out on his record-breaking eighth world title in controversial circumstances.
