Jeff Fenech blows up as Taylan May beats Freddy Lussick

Boxing legend Jeff Fenech praised the courage and bravery of Roosters hooker Freddy Lussick, but was baffled as to how his corner didn’t throw in the towel at any point during his loss to Penrith’s Taylan May.

May sprung out of the blocks and after Lussick ate a series of early shots, few would have thought the fight would last the distance.

“Oh my god,” said the boxing legend during a brutal first round.

“How tough is Lussick?”

The second round was more of the same.

“This guy’s got all the courage in the world and everything else, but he’s got a couple of guys in his corner who should be looking after him,” Fenech said.

“He’s a rugby league player, get him out of here while he’s still goddamn alive.”

The referee deducted a point from May for repeatedly ducking his head during the third round, but he remained comfortably ahead.

“I don’t care if Lussick wins, he didn’t need to take these 300 punches that he’s taken already – I’m just dead against it, especially when you don’t know how to take a punch, you don’t know how to ride with a punch,” Fenech said.

After the final two minutes, May had comfortably won the four-round bout across all three scorecards.

Fenech blew up afterwards.

“I hate that… one guy was totally outclassed,” he said.

“He won’t cop that in 30 football games, in 50 football games he’s not going to get hit in the head that many times, and we’re trying to say we’re looking after people? That’s crap. Crap by his corner, crap by the referee.”
