It’s a comprehensive win for the Americans in the end, and Australia will have a couple of days to regroup before Tuesday night’s rematch.
On the plus side, it was a record crowd for a Matildas match in Australia, with 36,109 people in attendance.
Australia were up against it from the start, conceding after less than 30 seconds. They should have scored at least one goal if not more in the final few minutes of the first half, but didn’t really create much after the interval.
The result was pretty much a formality after Rose Lavelle’s goal to make it 2-0, and a pretty soft penalty call made the final result look a lot more lopsided than the contest was.
