Kyprios enters Curragh Cup, Westover clear favourite for Derby

Curragh hosts the Irish Derby this month just after Royal Ascot and there’s more thrilling Group contests to feature in the spectacular flat season.

The Irish Derby festival takes place on 24th June until the 26th June, but Saturday is when the big event takes place, with the winner taking home €570,000.

Royal Ascot is still in the thick of the runnings but it’s certainly tempting to look over some ante-post odds and many runners at Ascot will be making the trip to Ireland in the next fortnight.

Curragh Cup Betting Tip

Kyprios has an early entry in this 1m6f trip that clearly suits him, and even more famously won the Royal Ascot Gold Cup on Ladies Day.

It could be too much of a quick turnaround after justifying favouritism against the likes of Stradivarius as the Curragh Cup sets off on June 24.

There are 47 runners in contention so far and that of course will be whittled down to make this an intriguing Group 2.

Burning Victory was also impressive at Ascot in fourth and clearly this Grade 1 hurdler could progress from that first flat run since October.

The Willie Mullins-trained horse will face a drop in trip from 2m4f to 1m6f if they go this route and that could suit well.

Burning Victory is by Nathaniel, and not only does she have that winning mentality but also the pace to finish off a race strongly.

No odds are available at this early stage but there must be a slight temptation for this race for a few trainers that had a good running at Ascot, not just in the Gold Cup either.

But that’s not the case for the Irish Derby which has 68 early entries but a clear favourite already.

Irish Derby ante-post betting tip

Westover 7/4

The Irish Derby will see plenty of runners make the trip from Epsom after going near at The Derby, to give another go over 1m4f.

Westover is now joint-favourite with late entry Tuesday for Aidan O’Brien.

But the former could make all purely based on the colt’s performance in behind Desert Crown at Epsom it’s no surprise to see the odds that short after being an outsider last time out.

Another shot for the trainer with over 900 group/graded winners is Changingoftheguard who won the Group 2 by a short head to Grand Alliance.

But he was nearly 10l behind Desert Crown at the Derby before and will need another step forward to threaten the Group 1 field.

Stone Age also lines up among his stablemates as another outsider fo the 16-runner field.

Westover still looks the one to beat over the only filly of the field who won by a short head in the Oaks to favourite Emily Upjohn.

And she’s been involved in all her trips in incredible contests, The Oaks, 1000 Guineas and Irish 1000 Guineas.

As the race nears it’s possible the odds for O’Brien’s filly by Galileo will be shortened in price and it’s certainly worth keeping a forecast to hand in case she keeps herself in contention at Curragh again over 1m4f.
