Luxe Wellness Resorts Introduce Sleep Retreats

Sleep has never been my strong suit. My circadian rhythms are so finely tuned that I get jet lag just from switching the clocks. It takes me days – probably close to a week – to return to my normal morning routine when we spring forward each year.

So it is with great interest that I’m following the new debate over the “Daylight Preservation Act,” which would shift the nation permanently to Daylight Savings Time.

Setting that aside, World Sleep Day is upon us, meaning everything is coming up sleep quality this week. Up to a third of Americans suffer from insomnia –and this figure seems to be getting worse. So much worse that top wellness destinations – usually bastions of pilates, hiking and indulgent spa treatments—have launched workshops and even multi-day retreats focused on improving slumber. Across 20 Rosewood Hotels properties, for example, the brand debuted the Alchemy of Sleep program – a set of offerings unique to each that focus on promoting better slumber.

“After the last two years, we are all overdue for a good night’s rest,” says Karina Chung, Area Director of Wellness, Spa & Beauty at Rosewood Hotels & Resorts. “Understanding how key sleep can be to overall wellness, our new Alchemy of Sleep retreats go beyond achieving peaceful slumber and help the body recharge as we go into 2022.”

Here are examples of a few top wellness brands’ efforts to help us all rest a little bit easier.

Miraval Resorts & Spas: Miraval offers unique activities to promote a restful night at each of their three locations, in Tucson, Austin, and Lenox, Mass.,. At Miraval Arizona, for example, Sleep and Dream Specialist Leah Ann Bolen, certified as a dreamwork practitioner and sleep science coach, leads workshops and private sessions. Guests can join Leah in Awakening The Dream, a transformative workshop, Rituals for Better Rest, drawing inspiration from ancient Egypt and Greece’s sleep and dream temples, or a private session, Dream Discovery, where they’ll learn techniques to explore the meanings behind their dreams. At Miraval Berkshires, guests can learn a meditation for better sleep, book a Sweet Slumber massage, which includes a variety of modalities, like aromatherapy, tapping, and acupressure, to induce a more restful state. Or enroll in the wildly popular The Way to Superior Sleep, a 75-minute workshop and sleep clinic, where they’ll learn how to fall and stay asleep according to the latest research. Guests learn the latest sleep hygiene techniques, including the use of lighting and temperature to get the best night’s sleep.

Rosewood Hotels & Resorts’ Alchemy Of Sleep Retreats: These programs run the gamut from sleep-inducing treatments and movement-driven activities to nutrient-rich menus and special amenities. Bookable at 20 of Rosewood’s luxury properties, each Alchemy of Sleep retreat follows Rosewood’s A Sense of Place® philosophy, inspired by the unique ethos and environment of each destination. Destination-exclusive experiences include Rosewood Little Dix Bay’s Acu Doze acupuncture sessions, Rosewood Villa Magna Madrid’s The Grounding Ritual, Rosewood London’s intensive Votary antidote sleep treatment, Rosewood Le Guanahani St. Barth’s healing sound therapy sessions, Hôtel de Crillon’s sleep naturopathy consultations, and Rosewood Baha Mar’s Bush Tea Sleep Sessions with a local herbalist.

Six Senses Ibiza: This BREEAM-certified property opened in July with dedicated retreats and programs to heal the many parts of the mind and body that are needed for a good night’s sleep. Six Senses Ibiza’s ‘Sleep’ wellness program, available for 3-, 5-, or 7-night stays, is curated to improve sleep patterns by combining advice from the resort’s own Sleep Doctor with the many benefits of yoga nidra and meditation, relaxing treatments and amenities, wellness therapies, nutrition advice and low-intensity training. For an even deeper dive, from May 6-10, the resort will host ‘Solving the Mystery of Your Sleep with Dr. Michael Breus.’ Led by the nationally renowned sleep expert, the retreat dives deep into guests’ patterns to create personalized plans to help them get the shut-eye their bodies needs to perform at their best. Reconnecting with the mind, body and soul, guests will track their sleep and learn how to care for their unique chronotype (which determines your ideal sleep schedule) as well as the best diets and daily activities to follow in order to optimize the ability to fall into a deep ‘ZzZzZz’ every night.
