Milwaukee institutes mask advisory as BA.5 variant bumps community spread to ‘high’ level

MILWAUKEE, Wis. (WKBT) — Mask advisories are back in Milwaukee as a new Omicron variant drives up cases of COVID-19.

Milwaukee entered the CDC’s “high” level of community spread Thursday.

“The BA.5 variant is spreading quickly in Milwaukee,” said Milwaukee Health Commissioner Kirsten Johnson. “Even with prior infection, the BA.5 variant is seemingly more transmissible and more immune-evading. The good news is the COVID-19 vaccine is working to protect against severe illness and death, but masking is an important additional tool to protect against widespread infection.”

Milwaukee’s advisory asks all individuals over the age of 2 regardless of vaccination status to wear masks at all times when indoors or in a public setting.
