Where To Travel Through Pantone’s Color Of The Year

Last year, there were two colors chosen by Pantone to represent 2021–Illuminating Yellow and Ultimate Gray. It was, they argued, the perfect match during Covid-19 and various lockdowns–just the right mix of color “to convey a message of strength and hopefulness that is both enduring and uplifting.”

One year on, and the world needs a deeper color, a more cheerful color–one that is in its own words, “audacious”… enter Very Peri (reference 17-3938).

As the world makes plans to travel in 2022 (albeit under existing travel rules and restrictions), a perfect marriage might just be to travel to a place surrounded by this color. France is the number one visited country in the world, and after Paris, an ideal travel route is to head south, to Provence and roam amongst the sumptuous purple lavender fields.

The Romans used lavender as a detergent and an antiseptic, as well as using it to repel insects. When they brought it to Provence they found a welcoming climate, where the plant thrived and is now harvested commercially across the region. The ideal time to visit is mid-June to mid-July, when the purple flowers are in bloom.

Don’t miss the medieval village of Gordes. Perched high on the Luberon massif and overlooking the valley below–the village is a charming place to eat lunch or dinner and shop for high-end traditional goods. Lavender is harvested in the surrounding fields and a good place to stop is at the Lavender Museum nearby (about a ten-minute drive away).

Finish with a visit to nearby Sénanques Abbey, whose Cistercian monks have been farming lavender and honey since the 12th century. They also run a retreat for people looking to spend more than a couple of hours roaming the lavender fields. Tours are available but bear in mind that the only place that the monks are allowed to speak is in the Chapter room.

Both Gordes and Sénanques Abbey follow strictly traditional French hours of service (the abbey closes at 5pm even in the summer and food is only served in the region from 12-2pm and 7-9pm). It’s best to make reservations in the summer months.
